I am a bartender by trade and am unemployed. I just recently joined a church. As I am getting closer to Christ, I am wondering if God frowns upon this line of work?

It is wonderful you are getting closer to Christ and looking to see what His will is in your life. This is a path which grows nearer and dearer to your heart as you go along it.

There is a principle found in scripture which I find helpful for many of these difficult questions. When addressing whether it was ok to eat meat sacrificed to idols, the apostle Paul showed that all have liberty in Christ to do as they choose, but the principle is "do all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31). This is a true guide for every aspect of our lives.

So, the quick answer is, if you can be a bartender to the glory of God, then that is what you should do. If you find that you are not bringing glory to God in this profession, then being unemployed is the perfect time to look for a line of work that will bring glory to Him.

Some practical questions to ask yourself might be: Can you use your line of work to help others? Can you share the love of Christ with those you come into contact with? Can you help them to have peace? What is your attitude while you are at work, is it pleasing to God? Are you asked to do anything that violates God's word or your conscience while you are there?

As you grow in your relationship with our Lord, and apply the principles you see in His word, how to live your life will become clearer and you will be at peace with yourself and with God. "The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things; and the God of peace shall be with you." (Philippians 4:9).

The Apostle Paul said don't not let anyone judge us on some things we do including eating, etc. God also has given us everything for food even every herb. I preach the word of God to people according to the Scriptures. I smoke weed in my closet. Colossians says I’m at liberty to eat any herb as long as I exhibit the fruits of the spirit and try as much to live according to the Holy Book. What’s your take on Christians who smoke?
