Could you please explain Matthew 6:22-23? How is the eye light or dark? (Jamaica)

Matthew 6:22, “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” The eye is the light and window of our being. Our desires, our focus, our activities reflect how dedicated we are to serving God. “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). The more we have the mind of Christ, the closer we will copy His example and do things according to His will.

“If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” We, Christians, should have a single focus or purpose in life - that is to glorify God. As Paul said, “This one thing I do” (Philippians 3:13).

Matthew 6:23, “But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!”

When both of our eyes focus on one thing, the eyes are singular. They may be singular for good or for evil. Sadly, in this verse, ‘thine eye’ is focused on evilness. This is a very dangerous condition. This may result in second death from which there is no resurrection. It is an extinction of that person.

Another condition would consist of one light-focused eye and one evil-focused eye. This would result in double-mindedness. Matthew 6:24 addresses this situation. “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” The Apostle James also wrote, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” James 4:8.

The Apostle Paul said don't not let anyone judge us on some things we do including eating, etc. God also has given us everything for food even every herb. I preach the word of God to people according to the Scriptures. I smoke weed in my closet. Colossians says I’m at liberty to eat any herb as long as I exhibit the fruits of the spirit and try as much to live according to the Holy Book. What’s your take on Christians who smoke?
