What does 1 Timothy 4:12 mean? ("Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young...")

1 Timothy 4:12 reads “Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young,  but be an example for other believers in your speech, behavior, love, faithfulness and purity.” 

The Apostle Paul did not look down on Timothy; he expressed a deep respect for him. He addresses Timothy as “my own true son in the faith” in 1 Timothy 1:2. He loved him in Christ and considered him as his own spiritual son, a true and sincere man in Christ.

Paul had enough respect and appreciation for Timothy that he entrusted him with the responsibility of speaking the truth amid some who were teaching false doctrine.

1 Timothy 1:3-5, “When I was on my way to Macedonia, I urged you to stay in Ephesus so that you could instruct certain people to stop teaching false doctrine…The goal of this instruction is love that flows from a pure heart, from a clear conscience, and from a sincere faith.” 

Paul defined what it means to be an example to other believers. He counselled Timothy to live a life that would honor the cause of Chris and not be cause for accusation, a way of life that would represent purity in our words, behavior, love and belief.

1 Timothy 6:11-14, “But you, man of God, must flee from all these things [from self centeredness personified by the love of money, 1 Timothy 6:10.] Instead, you must pursue righteousness, godliness, faithfulness, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight for the faith. Keep holding on to eternal life, to which you were called and about which you gave a good testimony in front of many witnesses…I solemnly charge you to keep these commands stainlessly and blamelessly until the appearance of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah.”

Paul taught not only that Timothy should be respected, but also that he must have loving respect for the members of the fellowship, and to teach this respect to others, a responsibility to respect others, despite their youth or station in life, on the basis of their life in Christ. 

Some examples: 1 Timothy 5:1-3, “Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him as if he were our father. Treat younger men like brothers, older women like mothers, and younger women like sisters, with absolute purity. Honor widows who have no other family members to care for them…”

1 Timothy 6:1-2, "All who are under the yoke of slavery should regard their own masters as deserving of the highest respect, so that they name of God and our teaching may not be discredited. Moreover, those who have believing masters should be respectful to them, because they are fellow believer. In fact, they must serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers and dear to them…”

These are wonderful lessons for us regarding our personal life in Christ and how we look at others. We also have a personal responsibility to live a life that would honor the cause of Christ and not be cause for accusation from others. Our way of life should be an example and represent purity in our words, our behavior, our love and belief. We, too, have a responsibility to respect others, despite their youth or station in life, on the basis of their life in Christ.
