Should Christians study the Book of Enoch?

What is referred to as the “Book of Enoch” is actually a collection of three ancient writings—1 Enoch, 2 Enoch, and 3 Enoch—produced over several centuries. They contain dramatic stories about angels, giants and heavenly visions that don’t appear in the Bible, which is why the book feels mysterious and has gained attention in recent years.

While the book was known in ancient Jewish circles and even quoted once in the Bible by Jude, neither the Jewish community nor the early church ever accepted it as inspired Scripture. It was not included in the biblical canon for good reason.

Based on 2 Timothy 3:16-17, everything needed for spiritual growth and godly living is already contained in the 66 inspired books of the Bible. If we spend more time in Enoch than the Bible, we risk becoming “thoroughly furnished” with speculation rather than with Christ.

One of the biggest dangers—especially to those still finding their footing in the faith—is that Enoch focuses heavily on the unseen world: angels, demons, cosmic secrets and mystical visions. These themes can easily pull our attention away from the practical, daily walk of following Jesus in the light of truth.

Paul warned Timothy to avoid “fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith" (1 Timothy 1:4). If Satan can't get us to stop reading the Bible directly, he would love to distract us by getting us to focus on “mysteries” and fanciful speculations that have bearing on our character or our relationship with Jesus.

Some Christians want to read Enoch just for knowledge, but would it actually provide “knowledge”? If you choose to read it, it should be treated as a piece of historical fiction or ancient literature in context of what some ancient people wrote, but not a source of truth to build your life upon. If a passage in Enoch contradicts the Bible, the Bible is always right. It is not a source of doctrine and not equal to the Scriptures.

Each of us has limited time in the day and the free will to choose how we will spend our time. The real question becomes, What will truly build me up as a new creation in Christ?

The safest and most spiritually fruitful answer is to stay anchored in the inspired Word of God, where truth—not speculation—forms the foundation of our faith.
