Will Jerusalem ever be rebuilt and for what purpose?

The most remarkable movement ever occurring among the Jewish people since the time of the destruction of their capital city, Jerusalem, is now occurring. It is the Zionist Movement. Its object is the establishment of the Jews in their own land under a government of their own. Thus, the nation of Israel has been reinstated!

There are many prophecies which show that the Jews will return to Divine favor, be re-established in their own country, and that the City of Jerusalem will be rebuilt. Consider Jeremiah 31:27-40 (NLT), “The day is coming,” says the LORD, “when I will greatly increase the human population and the number of animals here in Israel and Judah...I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah...I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the LORD.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already,” says the LORD. “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins...all Jerusalem will be rebuilt for me...And the entire area—including the graveyard and ash dump in the valley, and all the fields out to the Kidron Valley on the east as far as the Horse Gate—will be holy to the LORD. The city will never again be captured or destroyed.”

Isaiah 2:3 teaches that Jerusalem will become the Capital City of the world, "for out of Zion shall go forth the Law, and the Word of the Lord from Jerusalem," "And many people shall go and say, Come ye and let us go up to the mountain (Kingdom) of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob: and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths."  For a wonderful confirmation of this in the New Testament, see Acts 15:16,17.
