Daniel and three Hebrew young men were taken captive to Babylon. Daniel resolved not to defile himself with royal food (meat) and wine that might have been offered to idols. They did not want to violate the Law of Moses. Daniel asked the chief official if he and his friends could have nothing but vegetables and water for ten days. After those ten days, their appearance would be compared with other young men who ate royal food. At the end of this period, Daniel and the three Hebrews looked healthier and better nourished than any of the other young men who ate the royal food. (See Daniel, chapter one.) Because of Daniel’s desire to keep God’s law, God blessed the four young men.
