How long can a soul cry before it stops hurting?

We suffer from many sorrows and griefs. Every morning we may wake exhausted with heavy hearts. The new day is bleak with despair and hopelessness. Every night, sleep may escape us as sorrows hijack our minds and tears pour from our hearts. Is there no end to this relentless, exhausting grief? Why doesn’t God help me? Doesn’t He care?

God absolutely cares. He cares about every single, little and big detail of your life. He even knows how many hairs are in your head. As Jesus said, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6 Your are very precious to God.

Every one of your heart aches and tears are known to God “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” Psalm 56:8. Yes, God knows and He cares.

If all this is true, then why is God permitting you to suffer? Well, right now we are all suffering because of sin, both inherited sin from Adam and from our own sins. All mankind is learning the lesson that straying from God’s good and blessed will creates pain and suffering. By directly experiencing the results of sin, we know for a certainty that disobeying God is a poor, poor choice. But the good news is that this sin-sick mess will soon end!

Jesus has promised that when He reigns over earth, all this sorrow and pain will END! Rev. 21:3 and 4, “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people,  and God Himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’”

God’s beautiful promise will definitely be fulfilled in the future. But even now, God can comfort you. First, you need to put your whole life into God’s care. Accept Jesus’ saving grace and turn over your will and your heart to God. From that point on, you will know that God will be directing your life. Then start reading about God’s love and power in the Bible. Read passages like Psalms 16, 18, 23, 34, and 91. Embrace Isaiah 66:13, “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.” Memorize those scriptures which specially help you. As you feed on His word, and pray for His help, you will see your life starting to change. Little things will come together. Blessings will come from surprising sources. And your life will slowly be healed.

Having said all this, sometimes one’s sorrows can grow into a serious depression. In those cases, finding a loving, kind, sympathetic Christian counselor might be a good first step. God uses people to speak to us. A wise, professional counselor may be able to help a depressed person out of the pit of despair. It takes work and time, but relief is available.

Finally, when I think about sorrow, I reflect on the words of the beautiful song, “For Those Tears I Died”.

And Jesus said, “Come to the water stand by My side,

I know you are thirsty, you won’t be denied.

I felt every tear drop when in darkness you cried,

And I strove to remind you that for those tears I died.
